New Danish Princess Named Athena
In Moegeltoender Sunday, the name of Denmark’s newest Princess had her name revealed during her baptism.
Athena Marguerite Françoise Marie is the daughter of Prince Joachim and his second wife, Princess Marie. She is also the youngest grandchild of Queen Marguerite and Prince Consort Henrik.
The baby princess has three older brothers, Princes Nikolai and Felix from Joachim’s first marriage, and Prince Henrik, who is three years old.
Her godparents are Gregory Grandet, Edouard Cavallier, Carina Axelsson, Julie Mirabaud, Diego de Lavandeyra and Henriette Steenstrup.
Princess Athena was bit fussy during the baptismal ceremony, even waking up crying when the organ started playing.
When it was time for the bishop to pour water over her head, her three brothers, and two cousins – Prince Christian and Princess Isabella – joined Joachim and Marie at the baptismal font.
Princes Nikolai and Felix sat with their grandparents during the service while their father, stepmother and two half-siblings sat at the altar.
But after the service, the two brothers joined Joachim and Marie, and even the Princess placed her arm around Felix.
Princess Athena, born on January 24th, is tenth in line to the Danish throne.

Nearly two months after she was born, Denmark’s royal court has finally released photos of the youngest child of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie.
The baby princess – who’s name has not yet been revealed – was photographed by Steen Brogaard, who has often shot photos of the Danish royals.
For the photoshoot, Joachim and Marie were joined by their son, Prince Henrik age 2 1/2, as well as Joachim’s two sons from his previous marriage, Princes Nikolai, age 12 and Felix, age 9.
The princess will be baptized May 20th and it will be then her name will be revealed. It is tradition with the Danish royals to announce the names of their children when they approach the baptismal font and the bishop asks the infant’s name.
Denmark’s Prince Nikolai Celebrates 12th Birthday

This past Sunday, the eldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark marked his 12th birthday. Prince Nikolai, the eldest son of Prince Joachim and the former Princess Alexandra, celebrated his big day with most of the Danish royal family. The ones who were missing were the Queen and her husband, Henrik the Prince Consort, and Crown Princess Mary, who was in Africa, and the royal twins.
This meant Nikolai got to spend time with his youngest brother, 2 year old Prince Henrik, who is the son Princess Marie, Joachim’s second wife. Marie is expecting again, and this could bring another brother or even a sister for Nikolai this coming January.
The birthday boy already has another brother, Prince Felix, age 9.
Nikolai and Felix live with their mother, who is now known as the Countess of Frederiksborg, following their parents divorce in 2005, and their stepfather Martin Jørgensen, who Alexandra remarried in 2007. They both attend Krebs School in Copenhagen.
Nikolai is seventh in line to the Danish throne.

It was announced Wednesday by the Danish Royal Court that Princess Marie, wife of Prince Joachim, is expecting her second child.
Her baby will be due in January 2012 and will be delivered at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.
Joachim and Marie already have a son, Prince Henrik, who was born in May 2009. But this will be the fourth child for Joachim, who already has two boys, Princes Nikolai, age 12 and Prince Felix, age 9, from his first wife, Alexandra Manley.
After this child, there will be eight grandchildren for Queen Margrethe II and her husband, Henrik the Prince Consort.
Congratulations to Joachim and Marie!
UPDATE: Prince Joachim was interviewed today about his expectant wife and he had this to say about his upcoming fourth child: “We hope and, above all, a healthy and happy child. And what sex is – with three boys I would also like to have a girl,” the Prince told Radio Denmark.
When asked about the age span between this child and his oldest, Joachim replied: “I do not think it is a very big problem. The oldest two have bonded magnificently with their younger brother and vice versa, so I can not see why they can not also get along magnificently with number four.”

Royal Danish Summer Photo Session 2011
Monday was time for the annual photocall for the Danish royal family at Gråsten Slot Castle where they were spending their summer vacation. This year’s session was more exciting since it allowed the world to see just how big Frederik and Mary’s twins have gotten.

And boy haven’t they! Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine have developed round, chubby cheeks and were the darlings of the photo session, and of the royal family.
Their elder siblings, Prince Christian 5 1/2, and Princess Isabella, age 4, doted them as did their grandparents Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik. Isabella and Josephine wore matching blue and white dresses. Perhaps that is a hint of things to come in future photo sessions?
Although the twins were the stars, one must not forget the other members, including Prince Joachim, who was there with his wife, Princess Marie, and all three of his sons – Nikolai, almost 12, Felix, age 9 and 2 year old Henrik.
The Queen’s sister, Princess Benedikte, was at Gråsten Slot along with her son, Prince Gustav, and his girlfriend, Carina Axelsson.
Vacationing at the castle brings Frederik and Mary some time to relax before they head for a busy autumn. They will do official visits to the United States, Russia and the Crown Princess’ native Australia.
Joachim, Marie & Family in Greenland
Since Friday, Denmark’s Prince Joachim, his wife Marie, and his two eldest sons, Princes Nikolai and Felix, have been touring Greenland. The Danish territory invited the couple there as part of their 2008 wedding present, and now Joachim and Marie are finally making use of it.

“It’s a bit like our second honeymoon. Just even better because we have the boys,” Princess Marie told the Danish press.
One of the first things the family did was visit a museum in the town of Ilulissat. There, Nikolai and Felix, ages 11 and 8, experienced eating whale blubber and dried fish.
Ilulissat’s ice fjord was recently admitted to UNESCO, which Marie is patron of Denmark’s version. She told the media she was looking forward to seeing the fjord.
Another activity the family did was travel by a sleigh driven by dogs to Isefjorden, all while wearing sealskin outfits.
The family will stay in Greenland until Wednesday.
