The news is now displayed on a Easel outside Buckingham Palace in line with tradition.

A bulletin has been signed by the Queens Gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, who led the medical team that delivered the baby- was taken by a royal aide from the hospital to the palace under police protection.

The document said “Her Royal Highness, the  Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm today”

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

The Prince of Wales in a separate statement said he and the duchess of Cornwall were “overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.

“it is an incredible special moment for  William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” he added

The Duke of Cambridge has issued a simple statement saying “we could not be happier.”

A gun salute will be fired at Tower of London at 14:00 BST on Tuesday to mark the birth of the Royal Baby.
