Spanish Royals Gather for Victoria de Marichalar’s First Communion
Less than a week after the first Holy Communions for the sons of Infanta Cristina, the Spanish royal family were together once again to mark the samek Catholic rite for Infanta Elena’s daughter, Victoria Frederica de Marichalar.
All of the Spanish royals were in Madrid, except for the Crown Princely family. Felipe and Letizia are on an official visit to Colombia this week, and their two young daughters were not at the gathering.
King Juan Carlos arrived just in time from Rome, where a major football match is taking place.
Victoria is the King’s eldest granddaughter, from his eldest daughter.
Victoria’s parents were together for the ceremony, which is rare since Infanta Elena and Jaime de Marichalar separated in late 2007.
Daniel Westling Undergoes Kidney Transplant
The fiance of Crown Princess Victoria had a kidney transplant Wednesday.
The Swedish newspaper Expressen says 35 year-old Daniel Westling has an innate, but non-hereditary disease that led to renal impairment and doctors have long observed that a transplant would be needed.
The newspaper says Westling acquired a kidney from his father, Olle.
“Daniel feels very well after circumstances, “said the Swedish royal court’s information officer Nina Eldh. “Everything went as planned. No complications. It was planned a long time.”
Crown Princess Victoria is currently in Greenland, taking a look at the effects of global warming there. It is believed her fiance encouraged her to go, despite his surgery.
Victoria and Daniel met in 2002 at one of Daniel’s exclusive Stockholm gyms. They soon began dating, and in February of this year, announced their engagement.
The couple will marry June 19, 2010.

One of the places they will go to will be the Ilulissat glacier, a UN heritage site on the west coast which is shrinking due to global warming.
The visit will end on June 1st.
All three royals are good friends. Crown Princess Victoria once said Haakon and Frederik are like brothers to her.
